Week 4 of One Room challenge is all about plants. I’m so excited about this week because I know once the plants are in its going to instantly transform the space. Right now it’s an empty shell. A nicely painted empty shell with killer skyline views but an empty shell nonetheless. The plants are going to frame the space and give it purpose.
In last week’s post we discussed the elements of a Balinese garden; water, tropical plants and a gazebo or pavilion are some of the central themes of this design.
All of these elements put together to help create a feeling of lush tropical tranquility.
I’m not a huge fan of flowers (in my own garden that is) I much prefer green lush planting, and this serves itself very well for a Balinese garden. Some of the plants I have chosen include;
– Red stem/lipstick palm
– Cordylines
– Banana leaf
– Birds of paradise
– Croton Congo
– Elephant’s Ears
– Frangipani
– Bromeliads
– Bougainvillea
The plants will mainly be lined across the sides of the rooftop enclosing it, providing a warm, cosy ambiance.
As with most deliveries to the Villa , the plants were a bit of a mission to get up to the third floor. The planters are made of concrete and are extremely heavy and awkward to lift. I felt so sorry (almost bad) for the guys trekking up and down in the heat and humidity.
I’m fortunate enough to live close to a street that is lined on both sides with garden nurseries. There are so many places to choose from but I tend to stick to the same ones. One in particular because I’ve become so fond of the lady that works there. She’s such a cutie, even agreeing to participate in my ‘ Wes Anderson’ style reel.
A few deliveries later the plants are all in. I’m particularly thankful to Trubus2 garden centre in Sanur who not only delivered the plants but also spent time helping to plant and arrange them as part of their service. Much appreciated I must say!!!
Now the plants are in, it looks so different already. I’m really having to show constraint as I just want to buy more and more plants, but for now I think I have enough. When the other elements are in, it will fill up the space even further and I can reassess if I still need more.
I’ve ordered these rugs from an Australia online store (Zanui) because one thing I struggle to find in Bali is great rugs.
Maybe I just haven’t found the right stores yet or maybe because of the tropical climate rugs are just not used in the same way as they are in other places. But I’m a rug girl, indoor, outdoor I need a solid rug to frame the space and lay the foundation. I love the bright color and style of this rug, which actually has a Balinese vibe, its a win win.
Next week it’s about the furniture. I’ve already started to design my own sofas and I need to shop for a dining table and chairs.
The other One Room Challenge participants rooms are shaping up well too, with so much progress being made. Check them here out and follow your favourites. Only another 4 weeks until reveal.
