Week 7 One Room Challenge – The mural

Week 7 of the One Room Challenge the penultimate week before the reveal.  This week the focus has been on the area leading to the rooftop. The second flight of stairs in the villa leads to the rooftop and it has the most amazing high walls.  I mentioned it in my blog last week, but I wanted to go into more detail in todays post.  I have thinking about what to do with the wall for a while and went through different options. Because of the sheer size of the wall I knew whatever I placed there had to be really big and stand out. I decided a mural would look amazing on this wall as the size of it could really  showcase a life-size painting.

I wanted something that was in keeping with the rooftop which is a space filled with lush green plants and elements of Indonesian culture. The bold mural would have a similar feel. Something scenic and green, that provided the perfect entry to the space.

I found a local Balinese artist by placing  an ad on one of the Bali  Facebook groups I’m in .  I was overwhelmed with the response from the number of artists offering to do this job.  But I chose Didi because his portfolio was closest to the kind of image I wanted to create.

There were a number of challenges, particular as we don’t speak the same language, so we relied heavily on Google translate, but it worked out. Didi was great to work with, and eager to do a good job. He was open to ideas and suggestions to enhance the mural, and in the end produced something that I really love and that transforms the space beautifully.

It’s the perfect gateway to the rooftop and will help to bring it all together as you have sight of the wall through the glass doors.

The last week of the challenge is really all about the smaller details.  Adding the lights, lanterns and soft furnishings that pull a space together. I’d also love to add some shade above the table, and I’m really hoping the parasol arrives on time to provide shade for the sofa. Most importantly I still need to buy a pump so we can get the happy buddha water feature working.  How could I forget that?

I think I have enough, but I never rule out buying more plants.  I’ve just accepted it’s an addiction ( there could be worse vices I guess)

I used the fabric I purchased last week to make the cushions and they’re looking lovely. So I’m confident we will be finished on time.
