A Quick Design Escape to Marrakesh: My 3-Day Moroccan Adventure
I recently returned from a whirlwind three-day trip to Marrakesh, Morocco, and wow, what an experience! As someone who’s always been captivated by Moroccan aesthetics, seeing Marrakesh in person was absolutely thrilling.
As soon as you leave the airport, you're greeted by a sea of terracotta buildings. This isn't just an aesthetic choice—it's practical too! The terracotta helps reflect the sun's harsh rays, keeping homes cooler inside. Plus, the local red clay used for building gives the architecture that gorgeous, earthy hue.
Staying at Riad Star: A Design Lover’s Dream
A Riad is a traditional Moroccan house or palace characterized by an interior garden or courtyard, which is often adorned with a fountain. Unlike typical hotels, Riads are usually smaller, more intimate, and are located within the old city (medina). Each room typically faces the interior courtyard, promoting peace and privacy. Our stay at the Riad Star was a highlight. This isn’t just any place; it’s a historic site once graced by Josephine Baker. Every corner of this Riad, with its Moorish designs and intricate patterns, felt like stepping back in time—a truly historical immersion.
The Art of Moroccan Rugs and More
I dove headfirst into the art of Moroccan rugs. These pieces are not just decorative; each rug tells a story with its colors and patterns, representing centuries of culture. Exploring this craft with local artisans was both inspiring and educational.
No visit to Marrakesh is complete without getting lost in the souks. These markets are a designer’s playground, bursting with luxurious Berber rugs, intricate lanterns, and an array of artisan crafts. The sensory overload of colors, textures, and scents is just incredible.
Cultural and Photographic Explorations
We also visited the Photography Museum, an exquisite space where stunning photographs meet captivating architecture, offering a visual journey through Morocco's rich history.
The Architectural Marvel of Madrasa Ben Youssef
No design-centric visit to Marrakesh would be complete without a visit to the Madrasa Ben Youssef. This historical Islamic college is not just a relic of the past; it's a living testament to the high point of Moroccan craftsmanship and Islamic architecture. The madrasa features an exquisite array of zellige tiling, carved cedar wood, and ornate stucco plasterwork, each telling the story of its era’s aesthetic and technical prowess. The central courtyard, with its large reflecting pool, stands as a serene heart of the complex, reflecting not just the physical beauty of its surroundings but also the rich intellectual and spiritual life that once animated its halls.
Exploring the Jardin Secret
The Jardin Secret, or Secret Garden, is another must-see for anyone interested in the interplay of architecture and nature. This historic garden, hidden within the medina of Marrakesh, has been recently restored to its former glory. The garden is divided into an exotic and Islamic area, each demonstrating the principles of historic Islamic garden design which is characterized by symmetry, water features, and a profound sense of enclosed tranquility. The use of water is particularly symbolic, creating a cooling effect and reflecting the sky, which adds to the overall sense of peace.
Adventure in the Agafay Desert
Our desert adventure in Agafay was unforgettable. Racing through the dunes on a quad bike as the sun set was exhilarating. The day ended with a spectacular dinner under the stars, complete with traditional Berber music and fire dancers—a perfect blend of thrill and culture.
Culinary Delights
Even the dining experiences were filled with design inspiration. Standout spots like Le Sumana and the El Fenn Hotel Restaurant and Rooftop offered not just delicious food but also stunning modern interior decor that captured the essence of Moroccan flair.
So Much More to See
Despite squeezing as much as possible into three days, I missed out on iconic spots like the YSL Museum, Majorelle Garden, and the Bahia Palace. Clearly, three days in Marrakesh just scratch the surface. I’m already planning to return and explore more of Morocco’s rich tapestry of design and culture.
